Amazon driver charged in Georgia crash that killed 79-year-old Sandra Fitts

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said a woman died when an Amazon delivery truck driver hit her as she crossed Cumming Highway on Tuesday evening.

Sandra Fitts, 79, died at the scene. Fitts had just visited a loved one’s gravesite nearby before she was crossing the street.

They determined the Amazon driver was traveling west on Cumming Highway when he struck the victim.

The Amazon driver, identified as 24-year-old London Best, kept going after he hit Fitts.  “It appears that he knew what happened and he actually continued to deliver packages in the area,” Baker explained.

A Canton police officer found the truck with damage that matched evidence found at the accident scene, according to the sheriff’s office.  Deputies said the investigation revealed that the Amazon van was the vehicle that hit the victim.

Best is charged with vehicular homicide and hit and run resulting in Fitts’ death.

“Had he not left the scene it’s very likely that he wouldn’t been charged, certainly with these felonies. I mean it was dark and she was crossing the highway. So, if you’re ever in an accident, stop, call 911, render aid, it makes all the difference in the world,” Baker said.

Washington spoke with the Fitts family on Wednesday. They told her the tragedy continues to impact the entire family.

Fatal Car Accidents in Georgia

Fatal car accidents continue to claim lives at an alarming rate across the United States including Georgia.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 700 people are killed each year, totaling more than 40,000 deaths annually.  Factors contributing to tragic car accidents usually stem from reckless driving such as speeding, driving under the influence, failing to yield to other vehicles, or being distracted while driving.

The consequences of these fatal accidents extend far beyond emotional despair, often leading to significant financial hardships for the families left behind. Covering funeral and burial expenses, which can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars, adds an overwhelming burden to an already grieving family.
